Can Your Medical Alert Service Do More For You?

“We’re a communications company, too. We want everyone in the circle of care to be fully up-to-date on the well-being of the people in their care.”

—Toni Scully, Care Professional at Aloe Care

I’ve been in this business a long time, and as a Care Pro at Aloe Care, I speak to lots and lots of family caregivers every day. One of the most common frustrations with other medical alert systems? Families have no idea when a call for help is made or what happens after. Aloe Care solves that.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Assistance is requested; either triggered by repeating our wake-word (“Emergency”) or through the push of a button
  2. Our Professional Emergency Response team assesses the needs of the elder:
  3. If medical services (such as an ambulance) ARE needed — regardless of location, they will be swiftly sent.
  4. Then, a message will be sent to every person in the circle of care* and notice will appear in the Aloe Care app. During an ongoing call between the care recipient and the response team, the entire app will change in appearance and the emergency feed will be visible. When the call requesting assistance is over, people in the circle of care can tap on the notice in the app screen for details of what occurred.
  5. If medical services are NOT needed, everyone in the circle of care will get a message alerting them to the need for non-medical assistance.
  6. *To receive text messages, people in the circle of care must have “SMS” enabled under “My Account” within the Aloe Care app. For more: click here.

Often, calls for help don't need 911

In fact, about 45% of older adults who request help with Aloe Care do not want professional emergency responders.** Maybe the cat is missing, a sink needs fixing, a box needs lifting. There’s no question, help is required, so Aloe Care gets the message out to everyone in the circle of care (friends, family, neighbors — whoever has been added to our caregiver app) that someone needs to lend a hand.

More ways we help improve communication

I have a big, busy, loving family. Communicating about Mom’s well-being is a priority for all of us.

Looking at the Aloe Care app and seeing that my sisters have checked in with Mom is a huge relief. Seeing that Mom would love another check-in from me on any given day tells me it needs to happen sooner than later.

Having our notes shared in the app keeps us all accountable and on the same page — as Mom would say, “singing from the same hymnal.”

And there are less obvious, less direct communication needs served here, too. If I’m in a meeting and can see, with just a quick glance at my phone, that Mom is up and about, her air quality and temp look good - well, I’m really comforted by that and can set the worry aside.

As an Aloe Care customer and a long-time medical alert services expert, it is a huge leap forward to have a service that provides value to our family every day. It has become a helpful, trusted utility in our home, and what a difference it has made for the better!
